In spite of their name, these snuff boxes are better suited for pills or beauty
patches than actual snuff. An exclusive accessory favoured by both ladies and gentlemen
in the 18th century, they are guaranteed to turn heads at any re-enactment
gathering.
Each snuff box is a one-of-a-kind-original made of porcelain and painted in watercolour protected by several layers of varnish.
The inside of the lid can be decorated with portraits, family crests, boudoir scenes or other little surprises. They are
available in many different sizes and shapes: round, oval, square and hexagonal and all measure about 5x10 cms.
If you want to use the box as the
name intended, I’d definitely recommend you to stick to dry nose snuff of the same
kind as people used back in the days and not
modern wet snuff of the Swedish type. I would also suggest you to put some silk
paper between the snuff and the lid, otherwise the acids in the snuff might harm
the picture on the inside of the lid, as has been seen on original examples from
the 18th century. The box and the picture should only be cleaned very
carefully with a dry, soft cloth.
Tiny snuff/pill boxes of gold-coloured metal with glass-covered miniature paintings and plain insides are also available.
